How did i get here ?

~Bringing the set to life with light in color~

Was up 🤙🏼

I'm Ryan Schaminee and I am a freelance film light technician based in the Nederlands.

I work in diffrent positions in the lighting department.

That includes Spark, Bestboy , Board operator and Gaffer

I have such a great passion for this job that it's hard to just pick one.

The first chapter of this story starts at ROCTOP in Amsterdam, where i studied “All around audio visual”.

At Roctop I had a great lighting teacher Eric Wobma, that taught me the basics of film lighting and helpt me to start my career.

In my first year I interned at Caremel Pictures, where I learned a llot about table top content and running a film studio.

Next to exploring conventional lighting, I also got to work with film robots such as Melo and Bolt.

This experience taught me the ins and outs of high speed table top filmmaking.

The summer after, my first year i got the opportunity to work on my first film " Of ik gek ben ". Thanks once more to Eric for that.

There I met Gaffer Frank van Hekken and Bestboy Guido Hilbrink. little did I know that it would be the start of a great friendship.

I've learn so much from those two and i'm still learning from them every time we work together.

On the set of  “Of ik gek ben”. I learned the basics of filmset lighting and life on set.

That experience opened my eyes to a new world.

We now fast forward my second intership at Het Licht, a film light rental based in Amsterdam.

Having the opportunity to intern at Het Licht helpd me expand my knowledge of film lighting equipment tremendously.

I learned about diffrent light sources, grip equipment, generators, cable systems, voltages and equipment maintance.

After graduating from Roc Top, I continued to work at Het Licht to further my knowledge and expand my network of gaffers.

In September 2017 I decided to risk it all and start working full time on set.

Fresh out of the rental, I landed my first Bestboy job on a kids movie called "De Familie Slim " with gaffer Arjen Berkenbosch.

After the Kids adventure, I moved on to a Crime series called  "Der Amsterdam Krimi " as a spark assisting gaffer Valérie Blom.

Wraping up the crime series I continued working as a spark on diffrent sets and meeting new gaffers.

In 2017 I also started to exploring the world of DMX light programimng.

Though I had the basics of DMX at Roctop,

it never picked my interest until I saw gaffer David Bells and his team prepering for a new action movie.

Board operator Nistal Wloczysiak was testing the lighting effect for a train scene.

This lighting effect concisted of multiple led strips to simulate that the train was moving,

which i found was fascinathing

This experience led me to dive deeper into the world of DMX lighting.

I thought myself how to program lights using different softwares such as Daslight and mad mapper.

When I finally decided that this was the path I wanted to take, I invest in a grandma3 on PC system.

After that things got really interesting.

After a couple of years of light programming, virtual production started to become more popular in the Netherlands.

My first virtual production was a thriller movie called bumperkleef with DOP Bert Pot and gaffer Uwe kuipers.

This productions consisted of a lot of interior car shots which taken place on the highway.

To simulate a moving car, use Mad mapper to pixel map multiple skypanels.

For this to work, the lights had to be in sync with the video being played on the led screen and it worked perfectly.

After Bumperkleef I worked on many other virtual productions for both film and commercial sectors.

Some productions include Netflix Dirty line, Tommy Hilfiger,  Zeeman,  Starbucks, bunq and a few more.

I'm happy to say that this is only the beginning of my career in virtual productions.

It's been 10 years since I started this journey and I cant wait to see what the next years will bring.

Thank you for following my story.
